Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to the last sale three weeks ago, steers sold 2.00 to 6.00 higher and heifers sold 6.00 to 10.00 higher. Instances of 15.00 to 20.00 higher was present in both the steer and heifer market. Supply was moderate, especially with with the recent heat wave. Most of the offering having good attractive summer weight ups. Supply was moderate, with heifers out numbering steers in this week's offering, including a heavy supply of 6 weights. Due to technical problems slaughter cow and bull data wasn't able to be captured this week, however near 200 head of cows and bulls sold in addition to the feeders. Barn provided data had the bulk of the cows selling from 82.00-96.00 with higher dressing cows from 96.00-106.00. Slaughter bulls sold from 100.00-115.50.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
