Carthage - Compared to last week, Feeder Steers/Bulls steady to 4.00 lower; Feeder Heifers under 550 lbs. steady to 4.00 higher, over 550 lbs. steady to 4.00 lower; Slaughter Cow mostly steady to 2.00 higher; Slaughter Bulls 3.00 higher. Crossville - Compared to this same sale last week, feeder steers 4.00 to 11.00 lower with instances of 20.00 to 25.00 lower, heifers 4.00 to 20.00 lower with 600lbs to 699lbs 8.00 to 10.00 higher, bulls sharply lower. Slaughter cows/bulls steady to 11.00 higher. Greeneville - Compared to last week, feeder heifers weighing up to 550 lbs. sharply lower, with those weighing over 550 lbs. 2.00 to 3.00 lower. Feeder bulls measuring 2.00 to 3.00 higher overall with no comparisons available for feeder steers due to limited comparable receipts. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 4.00 lower overall with slaughter bulls 2.00 to 5.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
