Market comments — USDA reporter

LaFayette - Compared to last week, Feeder Steers 5.00-15.00 lower, with 500-600 lbs. steers being steady to 5.00 higher; Feeder Bulls 20.00 lower; Feeder Heifers 5.00-15.00 lower. Offerings also included 298 head sold on video. The video sale report can be seen at the following link: https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/ams_3467.pdf Savannah - Compared to the same sale last week, Slaughter cows and bulls steady. Steers 10.00 to 20.00 lower. Heifers steady to 10.00 lower. Bulls 5.00 to 15.00 lower. Quality fair to fancy. Demand moderate. Sweetwater - Compared to last week, breaker cows gauging 3.00 to 10.00 higher, with boning and lean cows 1.00 to 3.00 higher, and slaughter bulls 5.00 to 7.00 higher. No comparisons available for feeder classes due to limited comparable receipts. McMinnville - Cattle were graded and grouped and weighted on the ground. Cattle were mostly black, black white face and charlois steers and heifers. 752 steers and 572 heifers.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
