Knoxville - Compared to last week, feeder heifers and bulls unevenly steady overall, with no comparisons available for feeder steers due to limited comparable receipts for non-preconditioned classes. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 lower with slaughter bulls 1.00 to 2.00 higher. Today's offerings included the following load lots: 1 load ML 1-2 preconditioned Steers, 436 lbs., $288.00, light to medium flesh, mixed colors; 1 load ML 1-2 preconditioned Steers, 517 lbs., $275.00, light to medium flesh, mixed colors. Pulaski - Compared to the same sale last week, Slaughter cows and bulls steady. Trends on feeder cattle could not be established due to inadequate receipts last week. Quality poor to good. Demand moderate. Fayetteville - Compared to this market last week, feeder steers down 12.00 to 18.00 with 300 to 450lbs 4.00 to 6.00 higher, heifers unevenly steady, feeder bulls sharply lower. Slaughter cows down 3.00 to 9.00 with slaughter bulls up 5.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
