Knoxville - Compared to last week, feeder steers unevenly steady, with feeder heifers weighing up to 450 lbs. sharply higher and those weighing over 450 lbs. 5.00 higher. Feeder bulls weighing up to 650 lbs. sharply higher with those weighing over 650 lbs. 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Slaughter cows gauging 2.00 to 3.00 higher overall with slaughter bulls 4.00 lower. Today's offerings included the following load lot: 1 load ML 1 preconditioned Steers, 820 lb., $241.00, medium flesh, all black. Pulaski - Compared to the same sale two weeks ago Slaughter cows and bulls steady. Feeder inadequate receipts to establish a market trend. Fayetteville - Compared to this market last week, feeder classes including steers down 10.00 to 12.00, heifers 2.00 to 10.00 higher with feeder bulls sharply higher. Slaughter cows steady to 4.00 higher with slaughter bulls 2.00 down.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
