Carthage - Compared to last week, Feeder Steers 3.00-8.00 lower; Feeder Bulls 5.00-10.00 higher; Feeder Heifers under 600 lbs. steady to 5.00 higher, over 600 lbs. 3.00-7.00 lower; Slaughter Cows 2.00-4.00 lower with lean cows being as much as 10.00 lower; Slaughter Bulls steady to 2.00 lower. Crossville - Compared to this market two weeks ago, feeder steers/bulls sharply lower with instances of 5.00 to 10.00 higher, heifers 3.00 to 12.00 higher. No trends available for slaughter cows/bulls at this time. Greeneville - Compared to last week, feeder heifers measuring 2.00 lower overall. Feeder bulls 2.00 to 3.00 lower, with exception of those weighing up to 400 lbs. sharply higher and those weighing over 650 lbs. sharply lower. No comparisons available for feeder steers due to limited comparable receipts. Slaughter cows gauging 3.00 to 7.00 lower overall with slaughter bulls 2.00 to 5.00 lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
