Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Knoxville - Compared to a heavier test last week, feeder classes sharply lower overall and lower-quality offerings were noted for this week. Regarding slaughter classes- breaker and boning cows 1.00 to 3.00 lower, with lean cows 6.00 lower, and bulls mostly steady. Pulaski - Compared to the same sale two weeks ago, Slaughter cows 9.00 to 12.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 9.00 lower. Steers not well established this week. Heifers under 500 lbs steady, over 500 lbs 6.00 to 11.00 lower. Bulls 5.00 to 12.00 lower. Quality fair to good. Demand moderate. Columbia - Cattle were weighted at two locations, Columbia and Cookeville. Cattle were under strict vaccination and 60 day weaning program.
