Market comments — USDA reporter

LaFayette - Compared to the last sale, Feeder Steers/Bulls steady to 8.00 higher; Feeder Heifers 2.00-10.00 higher. Offerings also included 422 head sold on video. The video sale report can be seen at the following link: https://www.ams.usda.gov/market-news/livestock-poultry-grain Savannah - Compared to the same sale last week, Slaughter cows and bulls steady. Steers under 650 lbs 10.00 to 16.00 higher, over 650 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 higher. Heifers under 450 lbs steady to 5.00 higher, over 450 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Bulls under 650 lbs 10.00 to 20.00 higher, over 650 lbs not well established. Qaulity fair to fancy. Demand strong. Sweetwater - Compared to last week, breaker cows gauging 3.00 to 5.00 higher, with boning cows 1.00 to 2.00 lower, lean cows 4.00 to 5.00 lower, and slaughter bulls steady. No comparisons available for feeder classes due to limited comparable receipts.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
