Market comments — USDA reporter

Dickson - Todays weekly sale was held in conjunction with the Livestock Marketing Association's World Livestock Auctioneer Contest/Championship. Thank You to the Livestock Marketing Association, Dickson Regional Livestock Center and Riley Livestock for hosting the event, all of the producers that brought livestock, and all the buyers that attended and participated. Trends this week reflect sharply higher prices due to great demand from buyers all over the region in support of LMA's WLAC and also good supply and quality of cattle. This sale was closed last week in observance of Memorial Day so it is compared to the last sale from two weeks ago. Compared to the last sale, Feeder Steers 7.00-15.00 higher; Feeder Bulls 5.00-12.00 higher with 450-550 lbs. Bulls 18.00-20.00 higher; Feeder Heifers 7.00-12.00 higher; Slaughter Cows 4.00-7.00 higher; Slaughter Bulls 5.00-7.00 higher. ***Todays offerings also included a video sale. There were 5259 head of cattle sold in 27 Lots, Totaling 80 Loads. Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
