Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last sale: Bulk of the feeder cattle trade taking place just outside the current window or to deliver in May. Few comparable feeder steers and heifers sold 8.00-12.00 higher. Not enough current delivery steer or heifer calves to test trends. Demand continues very good for all classes. Seller interest moderate to good. Slaughter cattle market has improved since the last sale and this pushing demand for feeder cattle. Rains also came to parts of the Midwest which held the demand for calves. Trades continue to push record levels with some Beef on Dairy 250 lb. calves trading at 940.00/cwt. Supply included 48 percent South Central; 40 percent Southeast; 5 percent North Central; 4 percent Northeast; and 3 percent from the West. Deliveries are current through November 2026. Current delivery is 14 days from the last day of the video and is up to and including May 1, 2026.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
