Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to last week: Steers 400 to 500 lbs. 5 to 10 higher, Steers 500 to 600 lbs. 10 to 15 higher, Steers 600 to 700 lbs. steady to 5 lower. Heifers 400 to 500 lbs. steady to 5 lower, Heifers 500 to 600 lbs. steady, Heifers 600 to 700 lbs. steady. Not enough yearlings for a good test. The demand was very good. The order buyers had very good demand. The local feeders were present, but the sale had a small offering of feeder cattle under 400 lbs. The flesh condition continues to be very attractive. This sale had a large offering of weaned calves. This was the last USDA reported sale for 2024. The next USDA reported sale at Stockmens will be 1/09/2025.
