Compared to last week: Steer calves under 450 lbs 20.00 lower, 450-600 lbs steady to 5.00 lower, 600-650 lbs fully 10.00 lower with instances to 20.00 lower, over 650 lbs firm. Heifer calves under 400 lbs 20.00 lower, over 400 lbs steady to 5.00 lower. Good demand for this very large offering of high quality steer and heifer calves. Many long strings, including full loads and part loads, flesh condition remains attractive overall. The calf market was not as active this week, a few less buyers than last week and there wasn't the urgency to buy cattle as the sheer volume of cattle being sold across the region is starting to plug holes. Buyers were more selective in general, and were willing to chase the market a little when the quality was outstanding, but overall the bidding wasn't as quick. CME Live Cattle futures for the winter and summer months continue to trade dollars behind the current cash fed cattle market is having an affect on the feeder cattle market. Next reported sale will be Thursday Nov 7, 2024.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
