Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 700 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher, instances to 20.00 higher on 500-550 lbs, over 700 lbs 5.00 to 7.00 higher, except 700-750 lbs steady to 2.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 750 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher, instances to 12.00 higher on 600-650 lbs, over 750 lbs steady in a very narrow comparison. Very good demand for this large offering of high quality, very attractive, light to moderate fleshed steers and heifers. A few consignments in a moderate plus amount of flesh, but buyers were just as wiling to chase these types higher as well. Many long strings, including full load lots and multiple load lots. The market was extremely fast paced as buyers were anxiously bidding, determined to own cattle. Live Cattle futures lost nearly 3.00 and Feeder Cattle futures lost 2.00-4.00 but this had no effect on the market at the auction. Grass cattle buyers realize there won't be many more opportunities to buy these light cattle and they were willing to chase the market sharply higher in order to get their cattle secured. Cash fed cattle in Iowa up to 190.00, which is 3.00 premium to the front futures contract, helped to add support to the feeder market.
