Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Steer calves steady to 2.00 higher, except 550-600 lbs and 650-700 lbs 10.00 higher. Heifer calves unevenly steady, except 450-500 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 higher. Good to very good demand for this large offering of steer and heifer calves in light to moderate plus flesh. Most of the consignments were fully preconditioned. The weather has been extremely mild, allowing calves to easily maintain body condition and look very bloomy and clean while still on the cow, flesh condition overall was moderate. The market was most active on the greener black hided calves that really possess a lot of eye appeal, the market is much slower on the colored cattle as these bring a discounted price. With cash fat cattle at 153.00, or higher, cattle feeders are feeling better about the coming months yet the cost of gain is very concerning and keeping them a bit restrained. Next feeder cattle sale will be next Thursday Nov. 10, 2022.
