Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Steer calves under 600 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 higher, except 500-550 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher, over 600 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Yearling feeder steers and heifers too limited to make a comparison. Very good demand for this nice offering of high quality calves. Several long strings in the offering, including full loads and multiple load lots. The flesh condition ranged from light to moderate overall. Many of the calf consignments were fully preconditioned, yet there were many that were only carrying one round of shots. There were plenty of buyers for the calves that needed one, or both rounds of shots, as the quality and flesh condition of the cattle was very attractive. Very good demand for the few sets of yearlings, the market was very active as few of these cattle are available. The fall marketing season is fully underway now as cow/calf producers begin pulling their calves from summer pastures. Special feeder cattle sale again next week, Oct. 27, 2022.
