Compared to last week: Trade activity and demand were good to very good. Today's sale consisted of feeder calves and yearling cattle coming off grass. Feeder steers under 500 lbs traded 7.00 to 9.00 higher and those 600-700 lbs had no comparison. Feeder steers over 800 lbs were 3.00 lower to 5.00 higher while 900 lbs steers were steady. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs traded steady to 5.00 higher, while those over 600 lbs were 3.00 lower to 10.00 higher on a light test. Slaughter cows were 4.00 to 8.00 higher. Bred cattle had no comparisons from last week. The next available report will be Wednesday, October 05, 2022.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
