Compared to last sale: Feeder steers under 600 lbs. traded 8.00 to 19.00 higher. Steers over 600 lbs. traded 13.00 to 24.50 higher. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs. were 6.00 to 18.00 higher while those over 600 lbs. were 12.00 to 22.00 higher. No trend in replacement cattle. Slaughter cows traded unevenly steady to 4.00 lower. Trade activity and demand were moderate to good. This weeks run consisted mostly of pre-conditioned calves with those being weaned over 30 days brought the highest interest. The next available report will be Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
