Compared to last sale: Feeder steers under 500 lbs traded sharply higher. Steers from 500 to 650 lbs traded uneven, 4.00 lower to 2.50 higher. Steers over 650 lbs traded mostly steady to 1.50 lower. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs had no comparable trades from last week. Heifers weighing from 500 to 600 lbs traded steady to 1.00 higher and 600 to 700 lbs traded unevenly steady. Heifers over 700 lbs had no comparisons from last week. Slaughter cows traded 2.75 lower. Slaughter bulls traded 2.00 lower on a very light test. Feeding cows traded mostly 4.00 to 7.00 lower with the exception of lean cows, which traded 1.00 higher. Trade activity and demand were moderate to good. Todays run consisted primarily of preconditioned calves with the majority having multiple rounds of vaccinations and most being weaned between 30-60 days. There were also a few long runs of yearling cattle coming off grass. The next available report will be Wednesday, October 20,2021.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
