Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 600 lbs traded mostly steady to 9.50 higher, while those over 600 lbs traded 8.25 to 12.75 higher. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs traded 2.50 to 7.00 higher and heifers weighing over 600 lbs traded 1.00 to 3.00 higher. Replacement cattle were steady on like comparisons. Trade activity and demand were moderate to good. Today's run consisted of calves and yearling cattle that had multiple rounds of vaccinations, with weaning times of 30-60 days. Slaughter cattle were not reported due to reporter availability due to the Veteran's day holiday.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
