Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to last week: Steers 450 - 500lbs, 15.00 higher; 500 - 550 10.00 higher; 550 - 700, 5.00 - 6.00 higher. Heifers 450 - 650, 2.00 to 4.00 lower; 550 - 600, mostly steady; 600 - 650, 5.00 higher. Lighter weights in both steers and heifers were trending higher from last weeks smaller numbers. A few yearlings were sold, but the sale was primarily spring calves selling on an active market. The majority of the consignments had spring and fall shots, and were fresh off the cows. Demand was good, with some nice replacement type heifer calves likely headed back to the pastures, with a few ranchers in the stands bidding. Vaccinations and hide color also continue to play a roll in price range. Load lots and large packages also were a factor in prices as buyers vied to fill loads. Fall weather returned to the area, following last week's freezing temperatures and snow. The next feeder cattle sale is Nov. 3, starting at 8.a.m.
