Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Yearling Steers and Heifers, 700 lbs and up, sold steady to 2.00 higher. Lighter weight spring calves have not been tested, so a market comparison can not be made. Moderate demand for todays offering of mostly yearling steers and open heifers off grass, with the exception of a couple of consignments of spring calves that sold on good demand. Quality varied, but there were some nice home raised, attractive cattle to choose from. Market activity was also moderate for the most part, as several of the regular order buyers were missing from the stands and most of the lots were smaller; however, it was good for the few spring calves that sold, with a few of the buyers vying to get them on their load. The next Feeder Cattle sale is Sept. 29, with both calves and yearlings expected.
