Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder Steers under 500 lbs sold 3.00 - 4.00 lower; 500 - 700 lbs, 5.00 to 7.00 lower; over 700 lbs, steady on a light test. Feeder Heifers 350 - 400 lbs sold 8.00 higher; 400 - 500 lbs, 7.00 to 10.00 lower; 500 - 550 lbs, 3.00 lower; 550 - 700, 7.00 lower; 600 - 650 lbs, 10.00 higher; 650 - 700 lbs, steady to 2.00 higher. Today's sale, featuring Red Angus, had a nice offering of large strings and load lots of quality calves, that sold on a very active market. Several large packages of Red Angus Heifers, that topped the market in their weight range, were likely headed back to breeding programs. Buyers are still looking for spring calves that have vaccinations, which most of the offerings carried. The next Spring Calf Special is November 11th.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
