Compared to last week: Feeder Steers under 500 6.00 to 8.00 lower, 500 to 550 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 550 to 600 3.00 to 5.00 lower, 600 to 650 2.00 to 4.00 lower, 850 to 900, 5.00 higher, Feeder Heifers under 400 Steady to 2.00 higher, 400 to 500 3.00 to 5.00 lower, 500 to 550 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 550 to 600 2.00 to 3.00 lower, 600 to 650 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 700 to 750 3.00 higher. Good Demand for Several Long Strings and Many Many Load Lots and Packages of Feeder Steers and Feeder Heifers which sold on a Moderate Market. Nearly the entire Offering was Home Raised and carried light to moderate flesh. A higher percentage of the Offering than usual showed some tag from the muddy shipping conditions around the area as well as only having Spring Vaccinations which created some broad price ranges. The next Feeder Cattle Sale is Friday, November 5, Expecting 6,000 Head.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
