Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to two weeks ago: Feeder steers steady to 2.00 higher, instances to 10.00 higher on 600-650 lbs. Feeder heifers steady to 5.00 higher. Very good demand for this nice offering of attractive, light fleshed steers and heifers. The market was active, most notably on steers and heifers that will go to grass as spring turn out time is quickly approaching. There were some full loads in the offering, this is where the market reached it's full potential and was very active. Plenty of smaller packages as well. As the CME Live Cattle contracts made gains over 1.00 and cash fed cattle reached 117.00 yesterday cattle feeders had reason to give more for feeder cattle. Next feeder cattle sale will be in two weeks, April 9th featuring grass cattle.
