Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers of the 500 and 600 weights were steady to 3.00 higher, of the 300 and 400 weights 7.00 - 12.00 lower. Feeder heifers of the 550 - 650 weights were 3.00 - 6.00 higher, 400 - 550 weights were steady to 3.00 lower, and the light weights under 400 pounds were lower still. There were wide price spreads today; premiums were given for full loads and large strings while discounts were given for cattle without pre condition shots. Flesh conditions varied with some offerings with fancy condition and good stretch to offerings that had a flesh condition created by dry ground. Offerings cleared the market at a reasonable rate and were rapidly absorbed. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday December 4th, 2020.
