Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Yearling feeder steers and heifers unevenly steady. Steer calves mostly 5.00 to 10.00 lower. Heifer calves mostly 13.00 to 16.00 lower. Good to very good demand for yearling steers and heifers as cattle feeders want to refill their empty pens with yearlings straight off grass while they are available. Calf demand more moderate as farmer feeders have turned their full attention to fall harvest after being rain delayed for 3 weeks. There continues to be pressure on the feeder market as the cattle feeders are still struggling to get their cattle sold above 220.00, reports of 217.00 and 218.00 throughout the week in Iowa. Feed yard pen conditions have been a problem after the rainy month of September, making cattle yield poorer and cattle feeders now needing to get pens in better shape before they bring calves in. Large calf runs in the western and central auctions as the fall calf run is in full swing.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
