Compared to last week: A much larger offering of feeder cattle this week, feeder steers steady to 5.00 higher, instances of 10.00 higher, heifers mostly steady in narrow comparisons. Very good for steers and heifers, as the CME Live and Feeder Cattle contracts rebounded this week, the market at the auction was very active. Cattle feeders were feeling better about the market this week and were willing to fight a little harder to get some cattle bought. Long strings of yearlings continue to come to town as backgrounders are wanting to capitalize on this market and get their stock moved. Rains have come to many areas that were in need, yet more is needed to ensure a full grazing season. Corn market continues to slide lower, yet hay has become a very valuable commodity that is raising the cost to feed cattle. Cash fat cattle up to 258.00 as market ready supplies are still not large enough to take away the leverage from the cattle feeders.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
