Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Steer calves 4.00 to 8.00 higher, heifer calves 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Yearling feeder steers steady to 4.00 higher, yearling heifers steady to 3.00 higher. Very good demand for steer and heifer calves as the fall run is fully underway and farmer feeders have made much harvest progress and are ready to take on these strings of high quality calves as they are available. Yearling operators had a very profitable year and are wanting to get light calves bought now. Good demand remains for yearlings, supply is dwindling fast as the dry weather pushed those cattle to town and few remain unsold yet. The weather has been very mild and warm, dry as well. These conditions are challenging to keep calves healthy but they aren't dealing with cold and mud, there is great interest in buying these calves. Cattle feeders are feeling bullish again as fed cattle traded at 187.00-189.00. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls 4.00 to 5.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
