Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Yearling feeder steers steady to 3.00 higher, yearling feeder heifers unevenly steady. Good demand for yearling steers and heifers, especially for those coming right off grass, as the cash fed cattle market has moved higher again and the cattle futures complex has seemed to find some support. A few spring born calves are starting to appear in the auctions, most cattle feeders aren't ready to mess with a bawling calf yet as they are busy trying to finish soybean harvest and the hot days and cool mornings make it difficult to keep a calf healthy. The hot and dry conditions look to remain as there is no rain in the 14 day forecast. The calf run will start to get underway in the coming weeks as October begins. Corn harvest is still a ways off, but it's drying down nicely as the weather is so warm. Slaughter cows and bulls steady.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
