Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 5.00 lower, instances to 10.00 lower. Feeder heifers steady to 5.00 lower, instances of 10.00 to 20.00 lower. Moderate to good demand for steers and heifers. The weakness in the futures market was too much for cattle producers to just brush off as they did the week before. Cash fed cattle felt the pressure from the board as well and were lower as well. The extreme bullishness that many cattle producers possessed has been dealt a large blow as this is the time of year where fed cattle supplies normally are the tightest and now the futures have gone the opposite direction. Grass is starting to green, and numbers of grass type cattle are more limited but with the Feeder Cattle futures for the fall months at 250.00, instead of the 270.00 level where they were at, is forcing backgrounders and feeders to readjust their plans. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls much higher undertone.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
