Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 500 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher, over 500 lbs 2.00 to 6.00 higher, instances to 8.00 higher on 1000-1050 lbs. Feeder heifers 2.00 to 6.00 higher. Very good demand for all weights of steers and heifers as cattle producers are feeling very bullish about the future prospects of the cattle markets. Cash fed cattle sales set new, all-time high record prices, Iowa up to 192.00. The futures contracts did not offer support but cattle feeders didn't let that deter them in their pursuit to own feeder cattle. The market was incredibly active, but again it was the most active for those light weight cattle to background and make yearlings of. Backgrounders have their eyes set on the fall months of the Feeder Cattle futures and are anxious to own cattle to sell during that time. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 3.00 higher, bulls 8.00 higher.
