Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 500 lbs up to 20.00 higher, over 500 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher, instances to to 15.00 higher on 1000-1050 lbs. Feeder heifers under 700 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher, over 700 lbs 6.00 to 9.00 higher. Very good demand for feeder cattle as the winter weather eased and the futures contracts continued on their higher path. Cattle feeders were ready to step back in and buy feeder cattle now that the market signals were clearly sounding that a rally was taking place. Packers had to give more money to get fat cattle bought, up to 178.00, which really helped to add support to the heavier weight feeder cattle. The market was extremely active on those light cattle to background as it's only going to get harder to find those kinds. Fall months of the CME Feeder Cattle contracts are back to 270.00, again giving clear signals to yearling operators to have cattle sell during that time period. Slaughter cows steady, except Lean cows 5.00 higher, bulls too few to compare.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
