Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Steer calves under 500 lbs 15.00 to 25.00 higher, over 500 lbs 6.00 to 10.00 higher. Heifer calves 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Yearling feeder steers 3.00 to 7.00 higher, yearling heifers 5.00 to 7.00 higher. Much improved demand for calves this week after the weather moderated, and the futures contracts put on nearly 2.00 for Live Cattle and 4.00 for Feeder Cattle. Calf buyers were ready to step back in and chase the market a little after the steep declines the week before. The weather was very mild, corn harvest is basically complete, and there wasn't the fear that the futures market was going go into freefall again. All of these factors helped to give cattle producers the signal to buy these calves and give a little more to get the ones they really like. Cash fed cattle up to 185.00, which is not as high as many had been planning on until a few weeks ago, but still high enough to give hope that things could get higher yet. Large calf runs as those producers that sell right off the cow felt the pressure from the changing weather and got their calves shipped to town. Slaughter cows steady, bulls steady to firm.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
