Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 650 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher, over 650 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher, over 600 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 higher. Very good demand for all weights of steers and heifers, but by far the best demand is for a light fleshed steer to make a yearling out of. The weather moderated this week and allowed cattle producers to get their stock shipped to town and buyers were ready and anxious to get them bought. There is a great amount of optimism in the cattle industry as the cash fed cattle market trades around the 165.00 mark, depending on how muddy the cattle are, and the fall months of the CME Feeder Cattle contract are very enticing. Flesh condition remains the key to reaching the heights of the feeder cattle market as costs of gain are much higher than what was forecast as the feeding conditions have been so tough this year. Slaughter cows 5.00 to 7.00 higher, bulls 7.00 higher.
