Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 600 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 lower, over 600 lbs steady to 2.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher, over 500 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Good demand for steers and heifers this week. A quieter week, weather wise, helped to add support to the feeder market as auctions featured large offerings as there weren't the consignment cancelations seen last week. The flesh condition varies greatly as cattle that are only hay fed are in very light flesh as the winter has been so tough, while those on a higher energy ration are carrying more flesh. This remains the most important factor when buying feeder cattle as cattle feeders shy away from the flesh types. The cash fed cattle market turned lower, as did the basis as it turned negative after the entire last year being positive. Packers have enough leverage they were able to lower bids and get cattle bought as cattle feeders want to get their market ready cattle sold and gone as cost of gain is really high on these heavy cattle. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 lower, bulls 2.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
