What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Steer and heifer calves 4.00 to 8.00 higher, yearling feeder steers steady to 2.00 lower, yearling heifers unevenly steady. Good demand for this large offering of spring born calves, very good demand for yearlings. Calves started moving to the auctions this week as producers in central and western South Dakota are short of feed and needing to wean and sell calves. Farmer feeders have their soybean harvest pretty much wrapped up and are working on corn and are willing to take on some of these long strings of these calves when they are offered. The pace of harvest has been pretty fast, as the weather remains very mild and dry. Pen conditions are dry, which greatly helps to reduce stress on these newly arriving calves. Cattle feeders were able to sell fat cattle up to 148.00 in Iowa this week, keeping a positive basis over the board which is helping to keep them feeling good about the coming months. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 5.00 lower, bulls 5.00 to 6.00 lower.
