Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers unevenly steady. Very good demand for yearling steers and heifers, as yearlings continue to move off grass and come to the auction cattle buyers are ready to compete heavily to get these cattle bought and placed on feed. Drought conditions remain in Central and Western South Dakota, a few strings of spring born calves offered this week and were met with good demand. Most farmer feeders aren't ready to take a calf yet as they would rather have a good start, on their harvest before they take on the added work and worry of starting calves on feed. Rising corn futures prices are adding a headwind to the feeder cattle market as contracts are trading in the 6.75 range. Corn silage harvest has been completed but still a few weeks away from dry corn being ready to combine. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher, bulls steady.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
