Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 750 lbs 3.00 to 8.00 lower, except 650-750 lbs 1.00 to 2.00 lower, over 750 lbs unevenly steady. Feeder heifers unevenly steady. Very good demand remains for light cattle to background, demand moderate to good for steers and heifers bound for finishing yards. The losses in the Live and Feeder Cattle futures contracts, along with the gains in the corn pressured the feeder cattle market this week. Cash fed cattle at 138.00-140.00 is very disappointing to cattle feeders who had hopes of 150.00, which would have resulted in good profits for them. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls 2.00 lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
