What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 550 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, over 550 lbs steady to 2.00 lower except 800-850 lbs 4.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 550 lbs 2.00 higher, over 550 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower. Good demand this week for all weights of steers and heifers, best demand still remains on light weight and fleshed cattle to grow into yearlings as the supply of this class of cattle is much more limited than the feeding types. Cattle feeders have taken their foot off the gas when it comes to pursuing the feeder cattle market as the fat cattle trade continues to hold under the 140.00 level. Many in the industry were counting on the fat market skyrocketing this winter, the fact that prices have remained stuck below 140.00 is having an effect on the feeder market, especially so while corn futures are at 6.25. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 2.00 higher, bulls 5.00 higher.
