Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Only 1 reported auction a week ago, no recent price comparison to be made with this week's full run of reported auctions. Very good demand for all weights of steers and heifers. As the New Year began and all auction markets came back to their regular weekly feeder cattle sales, cattle feeders and order buyers were geared up and ready to buy cattle. The Live Cattle contracts faltered and traded lower as daily slaughter totals have declined, but there is great optimism yet from many cattle feeders that better days lie ahead and they want to have cattle ready when that time comes. Packers were able to buy cattle cheaper this week as they have had to cut their daily kills. Feeder cattle producers are eager to get their cattle consigned and sold as the market is so much higher than where they were expecting it to be just a few short months ago. Large auction receipts expected again for next week. Slaughter cows were mixed, Breaker and Boner cows 3.00 to 6.00 lower, Lean cows and bulls steady.
