What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: steer calves under 450 lbs sold 5.00 to 7.00 higher, over 450 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Heifer calves sold steady to 4.00 higher. Yearling steers sold steady to 4.00 lower on a light test as the calf run is in full swing. Yearling heifers sold 3.00 to 6.00 higher. Receipts were curtailed mid to late week as moisture was widespread across the state leaving muddy roads impassable to big trucks. Backgrounding lots are muddy with some buyers being cautious on what calves to buy until lots can dry out a bit. As the days get shorter it takes a lot longer for those lots to dry out, but sunshine and wind will play into getting the job done. Many strings of preconditioned calves in the offering this week whether they were fully preconditioned off the cow or had a 30 day wean on them, they were met with moderate to good demand. Slaughter cows 4.00 to 6.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold on a lower undertone.
