Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 3.00 lower, except 600-650 lbs 2.00 higher, feeder heifers steady to 4.00 lower, except 500-550 lbs 6.00 to 7.00 lower. Good demand for light weight and fleshed cattle that will be backgrounded, demand moderate for cattle bound for finishing yards. The CME Live Cattle futures added pressure to the market as losses were posted almost every day. Cash fed cattle continue to disappoint as cattle feeders aren’t able to get the leverage they need to drive the cash market higher. Large feeder cattle offerings were the norm this week as the weather warmed, 75 degrees warmer than last week’s -25 overnight lows. Feeder cattle producers were able to get their stock shipped to town easily and were ready to sell them, especially for those who will begin calving soon. The market remains the most active for cattle that fit backgrounding programs as supplies of these cattle are much more limited. Spring is just around the corner which is also helping to push demand for cattle that will run on grass as yearlings. Slaughter cows 5.00 to 9.00 lower, bulls 1.00 to 2.00 lower.
