Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Steer calves 2.00 to 5.00 higher, heifer calves 2.00 to 4.00 higher with instances to 7.00 higher on 500-550 lbs. Yearling feeder steers 2.00 to 3.00 higher, except 900-950 lbs 5.00 higher. Yearling feeder heifers steady to 2.00 higher. Good demand for steer and heifer calves this week. Many farmer feeders have completed their corn harvest already and now have the time to dedicate to receiving and starting calves on feed. The winter storm that struck the area two weeks ago was replaced by temps in the 70’s and even 80’s. Cow calf producers were able to get their calves loaded and shipped to the auctions and the buyers were there and ready. The cash fed cattle market, and the futures contracts for the that matter, are not supportive of the feeder market as closeouts of outgoing fed cattle continue to post losses. Very large auction receipts expected to continue as the fall marketing season progresses. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, except Lean cows 2.00 lower, bulls 2.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
