Compared to last week: Much larger offering of steer and heifer calves this week, a fair comparison could not be made. Yearling feeder steers mostly steady except 800-900 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 lower, yearling feeder heifers unevenly steady. Moderate to good demand for calves, good demand remains for yearlings especially for those that ran on grass this summer. This was the first large calf offering of the fall marketing season, farmer feeders are progressing quickly with their corn harvest and many are ready to receive calves in their yards. Calves that have received their full compliment of fall preconditioning shots are much easier to sell as the demand for these calves is much greater than those that only have had a spring shot. The weather has begun to fluctuate and yards are dry and dusty which makes cattle very susceptible to respiratory illness. As financial losses were so great last year few cattle feeders are willing to take on any extra risk buying calves that could suffer a viral respiratory outbreak. Cattle feeders still want to buy yearlings while they can, but with the CME Live Cattle contracts rolling back about 3.00 this week, they approached the market with much more caution. CME Corn futures contracts have climbed up to 4.00, increasing projected cost of gain, making cattle feeders look at fleshy yearlings with more skepticism. Cash fed cattle sales rolled back to 105.00-108.00 which also put pressure on the yearling market. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 5.00 higher, bulls 2.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
