Compared to the last reported sale three weeks ago, feeder steers 5.00-15.00 higher except several near 500 lbs steady. Feeder heifers under 550 lbs 20.00-40.00 higher, over 550 lbs 10.00-15.00 higher. Slaughter cows 2.00-5.00 higher. Demand very good. Supply moderate. High quality offering including several green yearling cattle weighing 650-850 lbs. Different day same story in the feeder trade with more stratospheric prices including 55 head of 632 steers @ 463.00 and 32 head of 807 lb steers @ 382.00.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
