Based on limited comparisons with the last reported sale three weeks ago, feeder steers under 700 lbs 5.00-10.00 higher. Weights over 700 lbs sold with a higher undertone. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs 15.00-20.00 higher with weights over 600 lbs selling with a higher undertone. Slaughter cows 3,00-6.00 higher. Demand very good. Supply moderate. Excellent feeder offering with good cattle from start to finish. Two loads of backgrounded yearling steers were among the top price quotes with 65 head 707 lbs @ 356.75 and 68 head 830 lbs @ 325.00. Cattle futures have gained a lot of ground so far this week helping push auction prices higher although beef cutout values did take a big hit Wednesday.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
