Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last trended sale two weeks ago, feeder steers and heifers steady to 5.00 lower except several steers 575-600 lbs 3.00-5.00 higher and heifers over 600 lbs 5.00-10..0 lower. Slaughter cows 1.00-2.00 higher. Demand good. Supply moderate. Good quality feeder offering including a large consignment of non-weaned front end fall calves weighing 500-685 lbs. The influence of bird flu reports is much different in the cash trade vs. futures as traders have pushed fall feeder contracts 15.00+/cwt lower while reaction in feeder markets has been much more muted. The current feeder index is 247.73, down around 3.50/cwt from a week ago. Beef cutout values are losing ground so for this week with fed cattle likely to trade lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
