Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the sale two weeks ago, feeder steers under 550 lbs 5.00-10.00 higher, over 550 lbs steady to 6.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, over 600 lbs 4.00-8.00 lower. Slaughter cows 8.00-10.00 higher. Demand uneven. Supply moderate. Geopolitics had the feeder market somewhat bifurcated although feeder contracts did gain back around 2.80/cwt on Wednesday. Buyers were still quite aggressive in the lighter weights while rising feed costs and 111.00/barrel oil caused some hesitancy in feedlot bound cattle. It appears lower cutout values and the negativity of events is going to result in a lower fed cattle trade this week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
