Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the sale two weeks ago, feeder steers under 550 lbs 2.00-6.00 higher, 550-700 lbs steady to 3.00 lower and over 700 lbs 1.00-2.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs 2.00-4.00 lower, over 600 lbs steady to 2.00 lower. Demand uneven. Supply moderate. Seasonally large price spreads seen depending on quality, condition and weaning status. Also large disparity seen by weight class in spots with some 500 lb steers dollaring up more than their 600 lb brothers. Cattle futures continued their positive week Wednesday following a multi-week downward spiral.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
