Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last Wednesday, feeder steers under 500 lbs steady to 5.00 lower, 500-600 lbs steady to firm and over 600 lbs steady to 2.00 lower. Feeder heifers steady, instances 1.00-2.00 lower near 500 lbs. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher. Demand good. Supply heavy. Outstanding feeder offering this week. Active trade with good buyer attendance. Wednesday was a better news day for the cattle with the cyber struck JBS plants back running, albeit at a slower pace, and corn giving up some of its big Tuesday gains. Last weeks slaughter was at least 20k head short and this week will be worse with the holiday and the cyber attack pushing the choice cutout around 10.00 higher so far to 340.16/cwt. Packers are buying what cattle they have room for at mostly 120.00/cwt. Sound familiar?

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
